Program Director/Head Instructor/Race Team Instructor

The Edward Teach Youth Sailing Association in historic New Bern, NC is accepting applications for a Program Director/ Head Instructor, Race Team Instructor and Summer Camp Sailing Instructors. Compensation is extremely competitive

ETYSA is a rapidly growing, 501(c)(3) non profit community sailing program, based out of Blackbeard Sailing Club in historic New Bern, NC.  Blackbeard is situated on the Neuse River in eastern North Carolina, providing consistent breeze, wide open waters, and an ideal venue for sailing. ETYSA offers a comprehensive junior sailing program for beginner and advanced sailors ranging in age from 8-18. Boats used in instruction include Optimist, Europtis, Topaz Uno, Sunfish and Club 420. 

Instructor positions are salaried, full-time for 7-8 weeks beginning early June and ending mid-August. Housing is potentially available. Significant additional income potential on weekends and shoulder season for qualified candidate(s)

• The Program Director / Head Instructor/Race Team Coach will have strong leadership and management skills, a passion for sailing, and significant experience working with children. This is a full-time position for summer, with potential opportunities for continued employment and/or a permanent position at ETYSA. Candidates must be enthusiastic about the sport of sailing and teaching the fundamentals of the sport. Depending on the qualifications and experience of the applicants, this position could be split between 2 individuals.  In addition to excellent teaching skills, the ideal candidate(s) will also have exceptional skills in program development, fundraising, adult instruction, and social media content creation. We hope to find a professional sailing coach who has a desire to help build a program, one that would enable a potential long tenure in this position, with flexible hours in the offseason. This is a unique opportunity to help grow our program/team/family and take ETYSA into its next chapter.

Responsibilities include:

• • Managing the program in accordance with best practices;
    • Designing and coordinating appropriate and engaging activities for the junior sailors when they are not able to be on the water;
    • Communicating with parents on a regular basis;
    • Training, scheduling, supervising and evaluating instructional staff;
    • Implementing a quality assurance/safety program to assure best practices in vessel operation, instruction and safety;
    • Developing a training program for an active Race Team, with occasional travel to Regattas on weekends;
    • Monitoring and helping maintain all Jr sailing club owned vessels and equipment;
    • Working closely with the ETYSA and Blackbeard Sailing Club boards on program preparation, development and ongoing operations;

Required certifications:

• • • US Sailing Level 1 or higher,
    • US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling,
    • CPR/First Aid.

Summer Camp Sailing Instructors will have solid personal sailing experiences, a passion for sailing, and desire to share their experience with young sailors. We are currently looking for at least one instructor that has advanced racing experience to elevate our sailors looking to compete at a higher level.
