Job Description

Wet Pants Sailing Association (WPSA) in Sayville, NY (Long Island) seeks to add a Race Coach/Head Instructor to our wonderful instruction team, one who brings a solid and successful personal racing history.  Instructors are also invited to apply.  Our current fleet includes 6@420s, 12@Optis, 3@Flying Scots, 3@Mercury, 2@powerboats (15' and 17' center console whalers), several Sunfish, plus some students use their own boats. We enjoy fantastic wind conditions!

Our fun learn-to-sail programs teach students (ages 8 through adult) seamanship and sportsmanship.  Our beginner through advanced skill levels teach all to become safe and competent on the water.  Many go on to become recreational sailors and others advance to become competitive racing sailors.  Good coaching and a passion for sailing is fundamental to success - we seek someone who'll improve and guide our student's tactical skills and race performance in the GSBYRA Junior Regatta Series and at other regional opportunities - while fostering a love for sailing!

Wet Pants Sailing Association runs a 7-week Summer Program, starting the last week of June (June 30th - August 15th).  As senior-level staff, you will with others help oversee and motivate newer Instructors while providing first-rate race coaching to the Youth in both Advanced and Intro to Racing programs, supporting them on Friday Regatta days as needed.  Lessons are on weekdays Monday - Thursdays, Fridays just races at Junior Regattas and weekends are generally free (aside from an occasional event or race). Mon - Thurs mornings we hold Beginner and Intermediate lessons. and the Race Team in the afternoons.  Adult lessons are on Mon/Wed nights, Tuesday nights we promote informal member racing in Sunfish, Lasers & 420.

A community-based sailing organization since 1934, WPSA is located in Sayville which lies on the south coast about halfway out on the island.  As a not-for-profit, we bring affordable quality sailing access to the community. This is a 7-week Summer position.  The rate starts at $26/hr based on experience.  This is a weekday position with weekends generally off, approximately 40 hours or more a week, with overtime pay. We don't have housing or on-site food service but downtown is nearby.  We have airports nearby, buses and trains,  beaches, and shopping, and NYC is trainride away.

We have a fun, accessible and affordable environment entirely run by member volunteers of our 501c7.  We're a big family and very social!  Youth students enjoy a themed Spirit Week with Flamingo Races, Movie Night, Junior Formal, Junior Regatta, Art Auction, Talent Show, Family Dinners, Clambake, Awards, Sailover Picnic, Pizza parties, Breakfast with the Instructors, Ice Cream Social, and more!  Our youth also enjoy volunteering at our annual adaptive sailing day taking differently abled teens from the community out on the water for a day of sailing that includes board games, dance party, cornhole, and a scavenger hunt!

Annual Video Yearbooks - check out our instruction crew and our fun vibe!
