Job Description


The Sailing Instructor position is an hourly position responsible for instructing sailing to all ages, in both group and private lessons at the waterfront of the Sail, Power, and Steam Museum. Group classes currently include (but are not limited to) a women’s group sailing program, Sail Kids For Free (SKFF) a weekly class with up to ten 8-14 year olds per instructor using Optimist Prams. Private lessons are scheduled by appointment. Instructors are responsible for notifying students/parents of changes in class time, postponement, and rescheduling. Accurate records of attendance, injuries, boat damage is required. Other duties include care and maintenance of boats and assistance with other waterfront activities as needed.

Roles and Responsibilities

● Sailing Instructors report to the Waterfront Programs Director for scheduling, developing

curriculum and lesson planning, facilitating volunteer help.

● Assisting with the Boat Rental and Charter Program.

● Conduct and supervise sailing classes at all levels. Inform students of proper terminology of

boats and equipment.

● Flexibility to respond to weather conditions and move classes indoors (knot camp, touring

museum, talking about the environment, etc.)

● Conduct lessons by creating a safe and positive learning experience for all students, helping

sailors develop seamanship skills on and off the water, including safe boat handling and proper

care of equipment.

● Conduct adult clinics as needed.

● Conduct or assist Waterfront Programs Director in weekly “graduation” of SKFF students.

● Check and maintain safety measures for sails, boats, and docks.

● Ensures that all boats, sails, and docks are kept in good maintenance, clean, and presentable for

use of students and visitors.

● Using facility motor boats to perform waterfront tasks.

Job Requirements

● Ability to adjust plans in response to Maine’s variable weather conditions.
● Friendly, approachable, and able to relate well with children, teenagers, and parents.
● Knowledge of ability to perform required roles in emergency situations.
