Sailing Director - Boston Yacht Club

• Junior Sailing: Oversee and be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Jr. Sailing (8 weeks in the mid summer) & Private Lesson Program (~Memorial Day to Labor Day), including management of the Instructors and Jr. Instructors.

• Help promote the program and manage Jr Sailing registration database

• Oversee assignment or reassignment of sailors to appropriate boat groups.

• Assign, reassign, or rotate instructors depending on the needs of the program.

• Create and deliver basic mini lessons at the beginning of each session. Instructors will go deeper into the topic when on the boats with students. For some topics, break into small groups and instructors discuss it with students on land.

• Attend all, and provide leadership for, the instructor orientation, parent orientation, and set-up/breakdown of the sailing program equipment and spaces.

• Lead the Instructors during Prep and Clean-Up Days

• Coordinate the Instructor schedules and plans for the Racing and Education Programs including Sonar Learn-To-Sail, Beginning Sonars, Intermediate Sonars, Beginning Optis, Intermediate Optis, Adult Lessons (Private & Group), and for special events.

• Adult Learn-to-Sail and Charter Programs:

• Charter Fleet boats - scheduling and conducting some checkouts, maintaining the list of volunteers certified to complete checkouts.

• Manage the Charter Club member database

• Help promote the program and manage Jr Sailing registration database

• Other Racing Programs

• Coordinate some on the water coaching clinics and tuning at the beginning of the season and prior to major regattas.

• Coordinate/Teach Off season certification and educational programming including US Sailing Instructor Certifications, Race Management, SAS. Ideal candidates possess certifications to teach some of these classes and be comfortable coordinating guest instructors for others.

• Asset Management: Managing asset maintenance, including sailboats, paddleboards, and kayaks

• Fleet maintenance – launching/hauling, repairs, preventative maintenance, ordering parts/sails.

• Recognize and perform basic repairs, like replacing a halyard or a broken block

• Assess when outside contractors are needed, such as fiberglass work and coordinate the same

• Tune boats prior to races and teach volunteers to do the same.

• Work with waterfront staff to ensure Race Committee and Mark boats are prepped and scheduled for events.

• BYC Program Management / Cross Harbor Coordination

• Drive the development of promotional materials via email, newsletter, social media

• Work with the Communications Committee and Communications Associate on announcements to the membership of sailing activities and results from events.

• Assist with organizing the annual sailing calendar.

• Coordinate Sailing Committee initiatives with the Race Committee as needed.

• Support regatta hosting activities.

• Coordinate harbor activities with neighboring clubs.

• Education and Experience Required:

• The Sailing Director will be aided in obtaining a 3A Hoisting Engineers license

• Must possess a US Sailing Level 1 or 2 certification in good standing.

• US Sailing Judge and/or Umpire certifications are a plus but not required.

• Competitive sailing experience and coaching experience required.

• High school diploma or GED required, college degree preferred.

• Physical/Environmental Considerations

• Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally (with assistance), and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

• Strong safety element in this role. The employee must be able to stand/remain stationary, walk/move and traverse the docks (uneven surfaces), lift, stoop, kneel, pull, reach, jump and stretch. Employees will need flexibility to stand on multi-level surfaces safely and be able to remove themselves from dangerous situations quickly. Employees must be able to communicate with Members and co-workers and give directions and be heard and understood by Members and co-workers. Employees must have manual dexterity for handling lines and knots and will be subject to repetitive motion. Employees must have adequate visual acuity to operate machinery and spot safety hazards and issues.

• The employee is subject to outside environmental conditions throughout the day and will be outside with minimal weather protection. Employees are subject to elements and heat. Employees are subject to moderate and occasionally high levels of noise.

Note our club assets consist of:

• 4 "Harbor-Fleet" Sonars - these are combined with 4 Sonars each from CYC and EYC to form a 12 boat Harbor Fleet which is used for Team Racing, Match Racing and other invitations events where one of the clubs is providing the boats. These are maintained and tuned to agreed upon standards to make them all even for these events. Two of these boats are dry sailed and only used for racing events and practices. 2 are wet-sailed (bottoms cleaned weekly) and also used for Jr Instructions.

• 1 "charter" sonar and 1 J/22. These boat are only expected to be used for lessons and members day sailing. Both are fitted with a roller furling jib, mainsail cover and not kite ready.

• 8 opti style vanguard prams (not optis). These are used for Jr Sailing Instruction

• Several SUP paddles boards and Kayaks. (note I can make the argument these really don't belong under the sailing director but they also require very minimal maintenance or time and are signed out via the same systems used for the sailboats)

• 2 ~15' coach Ribs. The waterfront staff maintains the engines and bottoms on these but they are dedicated to the use of the sailing programs so making sure they are ready and coordinating service/repairs should probably fall under the sailing directors purview.
