POSITION SUMMARY: The Sailing Director is responsible for all aspects of the RYC waterfront, including instructional sailing programs, regatta support and fleet management. The Sailing Director will work closely with various committee chairs and their committees for program planning, scheduling, marketing communications, asset management and capital planning. The Sailing Director, a managerial and instructional leadership position, will develop and grow our sailing programs, new sailing and racing offerings and will help promote volunteer participation. At a minimum, all programs will perform financially on a break-even basis or better for the Club.
SCHEDULE: This exempt year round position will work a minimum of 40 hours/week which includes weekends, some evenings, with days off Monday and Tuesday. This is a highly visible position with peak workload in the summer months.
SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare all sailing program plans, materials, documentation, lesson plans, promotional materials, budgets, registration forms, etc., including pricing.
- Market and promote all programs, building participation among members and attracting prospective members.
- Perform all related administrative duties required, including correspondence and communications, registration and payment of program fees.
- Execute a well-organized and successful series of sailing programs with close budgetary adherence.
- Interview, select, train, schedule, and supervise qualified coaches for each program as required.
- Provide personal participation in all related instructional activities, as well as oversight for same.
- Develop, publish, and enforce, in cooperation with Club Management, effective protocol, policies and guidelines for the safe behavior and participation of all persons, including for parents and any volunteers both on the water and on shore. Such must also include all the specific requirements mandated by County Health Services orders in direct response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
- Supervise all sailing program activities, including support services and on-property parent guidelines.
- Coordinate facility use requirements in keeping with the Club’s Master Calendar and do so in close coordination with Club Management and Webmasters.
- Organize, maintain, and improve program capital and operating equipment, grounds and storage area.
- Assure that all safety boats are properly skippered by qualified volunteers and/or coaches, and they are scheduled, prepared, and ready to provide all required on the water safety.
- Assure that there is fuel, supplies, and safety equipment for the safety boats.
- Assure that all club boats are cared for and stowed properly for the program’s duration.
- Assure that all boat safety equipment, including radios, is available and properly used.
- Maintain all sail boats:
- Perform weekly safety check of all sailing equipment.
- Replace parts and perform minor repairs.
- Report any major maintenance or performance issues to SAC Chairperson.
- Ensure that equipment is appropriate to support current and future sail training needs.
- Keep updated inventory of all boats, trailers, sails, spare parts, etc.
- Report any support boat mechanical issues to the Harbormaster and SAC for timely repair.
- Assist the Harbormaster with towing, moving boats from slip to slip, and launching support boats for RYC events.
- Work with the insurance committee to ensure all club boats and equipment are appropriately insured.
- Create an enjoyable, supportive, and safe sailing experience for all program participants.
- Attend and encourage instructor and student attendance at selected regattas.
- Maintain membership and participation with US Sailing and the BAYS organization.
- Attend monthly Sailing Advisory Committee, General Membership Meetings and Board Meetings to report on recent and upcoming events.
