Carolina Yacht Club, located in Wrightsville Beach, NC, is looking to add a highly motivated and skilled Instructor/Coach to help take our Sailing Program to the next level.  This person will be charged with motivating and inspiring our sailors to be the best they can be and to compete at the highest levels. This position will oversee the Youth Sailing Program, including managing the summer program, scheduling, coaching, recruiting, managing coaches, and managing our competitive Opti, Laser, Club 420, and High School programs, with the goal of increasing Club Member involvement. Oversees and manages all club sailing assets and sailing facilities, including maintenance and repairs. Assets the Waterfront Director with all club, regional, national, and championship regattas, events, and clinics. Candidates will report directly to the Waterfront Director, assisting them in the Club’s mission to provide a safe, enjoyable learning environment for our junior sailors and all sailors while ensuring our sailing instruction maintains a high level of customer experience for our members.

Carolina Yacht Club (CYC1853) is a member-owned private yacht club established in 1853 on the island of Wrightsville Beach, NC.  CYC1853 has both sound and oceanfront property for our members' enjoyment.  CYC1853 is additionally an active sailing club, both racing and recreationally.  Our members are encouraged to participate in the many sailing series and regatta opportunities offered throughout the year.  In addition to sailing, the club provides an active, fun, family atmosphere where members, their spouses, and their children can come to socialize, relax on the beach, swim, or participate in the many other fun club activities and watersports in the sound and ocean off Wrightsville Beach.

Our Sailing Program offers year-round sailing to:

  • 450 Junior Summer Sailors, including a full race program with travel regattas
  • 150 Adult Sailors
  • 50 High School Sailors/Laser/Club 420
  • 20 Opti Sailors 

The Sailing Program fleet consists of 10 Cubes, 10 Optimists, 22 420s, 2 Sunfish, 3 Lasers, 3 Flying Scots, and 9 Coach Boats.

Job Requirements

Candidates should be leaders who are highly organized and self-motivated, have excellent communication skills, and have a high respect for the Corinthian nature of our sport! A large part of this position includes communicating with parents, members, sailors, and other staff respectfully and effectively. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to help take this highly successful program to the next level.   With great support from the club, its membership, and the Board of Directors, this program is primed to grow and expand.   We are looking for a person who wants to inspire the next generation of Racing Sailors and who wants to be a part of building a legacy of excellence at our club and within the sailing industry. 

Optimist, Laser, 420 experience required.  Adult Sailing experience preferred.

Primary responsibilities will include a combination of coaching, general fleet maintenance, and yacht club event-related activities. These responsibilities include coaching and program management of the Youth Race Teams and High School Sailing Team with the Waterfront Director. Additionally, duties may include youth clinics as needed, as well as travel with the Race Teams and HS Sailing Team.  Other duties as assigned by the Waterfront Director.

Competitive annual salary with benefits.  Rate based on experience and certification(s).

US Sailing Level 2 certification or higher is preferred. CPR/First Aid, Safesport, and Boating License required.

Experience—Higher-level sailing experience/race team coaching experience is preferred. Prior experience at a sailing center, yacht club, or similar organization is also preferred.
