Sarasota Youth Sailing

Sailing Director Position


Sarasota Youth Sailing (SYS) is looking to fill a year-round, full-time salaried position of Sailing Director. The Sailing Director reports to the Program Director as well as the President of Board of Directors, and is responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission and sailing objectives. The Sailing Director is responsible for all sailing and on water aspects of the programs. The Sailing Director will work with the Program Director with regard to recruitment, training, and hiring of program coaches and will hold a leadership position over the coaching staff (approximately 10 year-round & 15 seasonal).

Sarasota Youth Sailing is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides sailing instruction and coaching to youth sailors from ages 5 to 18. We offer instruction to all skill levels through a variety of programs such as summer camp, learn to sail classes and competitive Green Fleet Optimist, Red, White and Blue Optimist (RWB), O’Pen Skiff, Laser, High School Club 420, and Multihull teams. The Sailing Director develops, promotes and oversees both the community sailing programs (400+ sailors) and competitive race teams (70-80 sailors).

Sarasota Youth Sailing operates on the grounds of the Sarasota Sailing Squadron located at 1717 Ken Thompson Parkway situated on the beautiful Sarasota Bay.

Job Description:

  • Oversee and manage the SYS program wide regatta calendar

  • Collaborate with the Fleets and Facilities Manager to ensure assets are prepared to travel to and from regattas

  • Be hands-on in regatta preparations

  • Assist in recruitment, training, and hiring of SYS coaching staff

  • Assist in recruitment of sailors and program development

  • Supervise and serve as a mentor for all coaching staff

  • Collaborate with the Fleets and Facilities Manager to ensure that fleet needs are met and consistently maintained

  • Collaborate with the Fleets and Facilities Manager to ensure all fleets and maintenance logs are current

  • Work closely with the Program Director and the Fleets and Facilities Manager

  • Fill in for Program Director or Fleets and Facilities Manager when needed

  • Coach sailing within the program Race Teams, Learn to Sail, and/or Summer Camp

  • Attend and supervise all SYS practices and regattas; travel required

  • Oversee the annual SailFest Fundraiser on water regatta management and work closely with the Fleets and Facilities Manager


Required Qualifications:


  • US Sailing Certifications required, Level 3 Preferred

  • NASBLA for the State of Florida

  • First Aid, CPR, AED, Safesport Certified

  • Pass state of Florida Level 2 Background Check

  • Current and valid driver’s license

  • Minimum of 1-2 years serving in a leadership role within a sailing program

  • Sailing experience with youth racing and community sailing programs

  • Previous coaching experience and race team experience

  • Experience planning regattas and working on race committees

  • Positive role model for children

  • Passionate about sailing, being a teamplayer, and hardworking

  • Physical ability to lift and move boats and sailboats

  • Strong logistical and management experience and skills

  • Experience with budgets

  • Exemplary communications skills and professional demeanor

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google platforms
