Director of Sailing

Job Description

The Director of Sailing for the Bay Waveland Yacht Club oversees the club sailing program throughout the year. The director reports to the club manager and the commodore with further direction from the Board of Governors. Duties of the Director of Sailing are as follows:

1. Maintenance and overall upkeep of club owned boats and other assets.

a. Flying Scots, Optis, 420s, Sunfish, and Viper 640s

b. Scat Boats including Boston Whaler, Sundance, and Oyster 26 (Bay Watch)

c. Storage Trailers containing sailing equipment and race committee equipment

d. Various trailers for club fleets

e. Develop and implement a schedule of preventative maintenance for club boats

f. Develop and maintain an inventory of parts and equipment

2. Oversee the BWYC Summer Sailing Program (Sailing Camp)

a. Develop and Implement an 8 Week Summer sailing school program and curriculum

b. Interview and hire qualified summer sailing school instructors

i. US Sailing Level 1 certified

ii. CPR training

c. Promote the Summer Sailing School to ensure maximum income to the club

i. Ages 6 and up

ii. Nonmember students encouraged

iii. Instruction in Flying Scots, Optis, 420s, and Sunfish

3. Develop and Implement an Adult Sailing Program

a. Develop an Adult Sailing curriculum including schedule and fee structure

b. Promote the program with an emphasis on participation in club racing

c. Develop a year-around adult sailing program to promote winter sailing and sailing related activities (i.e. – classroom style clinics and social events).

4. Develop and Instruct the BWYC Youth Racing Team

a. Motivate the BWYC Juniors to participate in GYA Capdeville Regattas with an emphasis on the Junior Lipton Regatta.

b. Promote and Develop a BWYC Opti Racing Team

c. Identify local and regional events to target BWYC junior participation

d. Attend monthly BWYC Junior Yacht Club meetings

e. Promote and Develop Friday Evening and Weekend Racing for our Juniors

f. As required, travel to youth regattas to support the BWYC junior racing team

g. Coordinate with the SSC Sailing Team and other local high school sailing teams to create mutually beneficial sailing programs that grow participation at the BWYC.

5. Develop and Coordinate Youth Sailing clinics utilizing club Optis and 420s

a. Develop Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter paid clinics using Optis

b. Promote program to members and nonmembers

c. Attempt to bring in guest instructors

6. Coordinate the BWYC Capdeville Racing Team in the Viper 640s

a. Make every effort to ensure that a BWYC team competes in all events

b. Ready the club Viper for travel prior to each Cap Event

7. Manage BWYC Racing Schedule

a. Work with the Capdeville Chair, Regatta Chair, and Race Committee Chair to develop the BWYC Racing Schedule

b. Run Wednesday Night Races

i. Manage Scot Sign Up sheet

ii. Have Sails and boats ready for members

c. Run Summer Series Racing

i. Promote Participation in all classes

ii. Perform Race Committee duties

iii. Keep track of scoring

d. Develop junior racing on Wednesday nights, Friday nights, and weekends

e. Develop new and fun ways to get people out on the water

8. Develop and Manage the Lipton Team Viper Training Schedule

a. Work with the Capdeville Chair in scheduling Viper Training days at the club

b. Run the BWYC Boh Series for Lipton Team Qualification

c. Coordinate Lipton Cup Practice Days

9. Seek out and find opportunities to host appropriate regattas at BWYC.

a. U.S. Sailing Championship Proposals

b. Youth Regattas (Opti GC Champs, Ida Lewis, etc.)

c. Sunfish, Flying Scot, and Viper Regattas

d. Capdeville Regatta permanently held at BWYC

10. Assist in running all BWYC hosted regattas including the 2018 Liptons

a. Assist the Regatta Chair in planning for the event

b. Serve in some capacity on the Race Committee

c. Assist the BWYC Lipton Team

11. Work with the Harbor Chair and the Manager with oversight of the BWYC Harbor and Dry Storage Area

a. Assist with the leasing of all slips in the harbor

b. Regular patrols of the harbor and dry storage

c. Assist with the management of all leases

d. Assist the BWYC Treasurer with monthly revenue reports

e. Develop and implement plan to move boats and equipment during storm warnings or watches

12. Assist manager with the hiring and management of Summer pool life guards
