Job Title: Sailing Director

Type of Position: Full Time Exempt Employee

Compensation: $75k - $110k

Reports to:

General Manager

Dean of Sailing & Race and Sailing Committee Chairs

Job Description:

Eastern Yacht Club (EYC) is seeking an experienced Sailing Director to lead and enhance its vibrant sailing community. This role involves overseeing the design, execution, and supervision of the club’s recreational sailing, junior sailing, and racing programs. The Sailing Director will work closely with the EYC Sailing Committee, Race Committee, and Waterfront Committee, reporting directly to the Dean of Sailing.

Responsibilities:

  1. Program Management
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Sailing and Sailing Committee to support various programs, including adult sailing, women’s racing, educational seminars, and racing events.
  • Develop and manage the annual sailing budget alongside the Dean of Sailing and Chair of the Sailing Committee.
  • Represent the EYC at regional and national sailing associations, attending meetings to advance the club's sailing mission.
  • Coordinate with other Marblehead yacht clubs for harbor sailing events.
  • Work with the EYC Communications Director to document member participation in sailing activities and create content for web, social media, and email communications.

 

  1. Adult Sailing Development
  • Develop and implement programs that enhance the sailing, racing, and seamanship skills of adult EYC members. Pathways to comfort and self-confidence should be offered for totally inexperienced sailors.
  • Coordinate with Corinthian YC and Boston YC on the development and management of women's sailing initiatives and getting non-boat-owners organized with family sails and introductions. Encourage Fleet Racing on Saturday afternoons with MRA on lines close to harbor.

 

  1. Fleet Maintenance
  • Oversee the maintenance of the EYC fleet, ensuring vessels are easily available for use and functionality of all systems. This includes rec and race sails, sail covers, standing and running rigging and all working gear on hulls, decks and spars.
  • Maintain and organize the club's sailing program storage and operational areas.
  • Coordinate with BYC and CYC for use of shared assets for practices, club and harbor-wide special events.
  • Provide logistical support to other clubs for helping them host events in Sonars, whether or not EYC is the host.

 

  1. Junior Sailing Program
  • Oversee the hiring and supervision of the Junior Sailing Director and staff.
  • Assist the Junior Sailing Director in creating a curriculum that aligns with the goals of the junior sailing program.
  • Support the Junior Sailing sub-committee and Director in the hiring of instructors as needed. Make sailing fun and encourage 9 year olds to continue with the youth sailing program at Pleon Yacht Club.
  • Coordinate with Pleon Yacht Club to offer keelboat programming (for Pleon enrollees) with Eastern’s Sonars for kids who want to try keelboats.

 

  1. Race Management
  • Ensure that all EYC sailing events are conducted professionally, collaborating with the Dean of Sailing and the Chair of      the Race Committee.
  • Identify and attract major regional, national, and international regattas in partnership with the Sailing Committee.
  • Support various racing events, including but not limited to weeknight PHRF racing, weekend one-design racing, Team EYC events , and the Fall and Spring Laser Series.

 

  1. Team and Event Management
  • Manage the Eastern Yacht Club Sailing Team, including securing invitations to major events, organizing participation, and scheduling sailors.
  • Promote and support Team, Match and Fleet Racing at EYC, encouraging new participants to engage in these disciplines.

Requirements:

  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively with volunteers
  • Strong sailing background and connections within the sailing community
  • Race management experience and a depth of understanding of the Racing Rules of Sailing
  • Management experience is a plus
