Job Description

Manhasset Bay Yacht Club of Port Washington, NY is seeking an experienced Sailing Director to manage all sailing related programs, activities, and vessels. Depending on the candidate, the employment may be for the summer season only, or a year-round position.

The ideal candidate is a motivated individual with extensive sailing experience on both dinghies and keelboats, excellent communication skills, as well as management and business acumen.  He or she will positively represent the club and have excellent communication and presentation skills.

Manhasset Bay Yacht Club, established in 1891, has a history of more than 120 years as a leader in the yachting world. We have an impressive fleet of boats, including Optimists, RS Fevas, Open Skiffs, C420s for our Junior Sailing program. In addition, we have a well-maintained fleet of two Hobie catamarans, eight Ideal 18s as well as two large club-owned keelboats: a J105 and a Beneteau 281. We have a fleet of 8 Boston Whaler coach boats in addition.

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will have the ability to conduct private sailing lessons to supplement her or his income.

Job Requirements
Responsibilities:
• Organize and implement all sailing programs including our Ideal 18 sailing program, J105 and Beneteau 281 boat use and the Yacht Club’s active Junior Sailing program in the summer. If hired for the full year, responsibilities will include conducting a high school sailing team in the fall and spring, and assisting in the Club’s frostbiting program during the winter.
• Manage the repairs, maintenance, cleaning, and storage on all club-owned sailing vessels including the sailing dinghy’s, Ideal 18s, and our large keelboats, the J105 and Beneteau 281
• Hire and manage a team of sailing instructors and a head instructor for the summer Junior Sailing program
• Work closely with the General Manager and Waterfront Manager
• Facilitate the Junior Sailing Program by constructing the curriculum for all classes.
• Ensure that Jr. Sailing participants are safe, entertained, and learning both on and off the water
• Facilitate regatta logistics and transportation together with the Waterfront Manager.
• Facilitate and conduct sailing lessons with junior and adult sailors on all types of sailing vessels
• Assist with race committee and facilitate regattas
• Communicate efficiently with the General Manager, Board Members, and the membership body as a whole.
• Edit the club website’s sailing page to reflect regattas, programs, and events

Job Requirements:
• US Sailing Small Boat Instructor Level 1 or higher
• US Powerboating or Basic Keelboat Instructor certification a plus
• Current First Aid and CPR certifications
• Three plus years of sailing instruction experience
• Proven communication and education skills
• A passion for sailing education and working with kids as well as adults
• Experience with the racing rules, race committee, and racing on variety of sailboats
• Keelboat sailing and racing experience
• Experience loading and operating a towing vehicle with a boat trailer
• Experience with Microsoft Office
• Ability to communicate to targeted groups using social media
