OCS is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating an inclusive, diverse sailing community by providing access, recreation, and competition for all. We offer a variety of programs, classes, and experiences for sailors of all ages and skill levels. We operate out of two facilities, both in the heart of downtown Olympia, Washington with access to Budd Inlet - the terminus of the Puget Sound. With a large fleet of sailing dinghies and keelboats we run a wide variety of programs for youth and adults. Our flagship programs are our youth race teams that are nationally ranked and recognized, in addition to our STEAM and environmental education camps!

Our main location is at the Olympia Yacht Club - our largest sponsor. In the heart of downtown it is a fun and active place to work. Surrounded by National Parks, and close to the Ocean, Olympia is an ideal place to live and work for outdoor enthusiasts.

 
The Sailing Director is responsible for training, managing and leading our Summer Programming and assistant in the operations of our shoulder season youth race teams. They are responsible for planning curriculum, classes, partnerships and programs prior to the start of the season, as well as Coaching Spring and Fall practices for the High School JV/Sea-Team’s and Opti Green/Champs Teams when needed. Your goal: grow your professional management experience, and not only maintain current programs, but improve them. This position reports to the Executive Director.

 

Position Term: this is a full time, year round position, possible contract options with generous time off in winter.

 

 

Duties:

 

  • Lead all aspects of planning and preparation for the Summer Season: requires communication, writing, excel, word, power point, google drive and light website/Point of Sales system editing abilities, the latter two you would receive training in. Bonus, but not required: social media, and graphic design acumen

  • Oversee Summer Programs providing support to seasonal staff, and working with Executive Director to plan and execute special events, maintain and grow partnerships

  • Support youth and High School Race Teams in terms of seasonal Coaching (Spring and Fall - no Summer Coaching), organization and coordination - working in tandem with the Executive Director, and Head Coach

  • Assist in the development of annual budgets, annual report, and grant maintenance

  • Responsible for the organization and maintenance of the boathouse and other sailing spaces

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Extensive dinghy sailing experience, racing experience preferred

  • 2-3 years experience with communications, planning, and organizing sailing programs, teams and events

  • 2-3 years experience coordinating and/or managing sailing camps/race teams

  • Equal or commensurate experience running/coaching a race program

  • Excellent communication skills: in person, over the phone, and by email

  • Driver’s license and the ability to tow and launch boats

  • Competent and safe motorboat operation

  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification

  • WA State Boaters Safety Card–may be acquired prior to starting

  • Understanding of boating safety and cold water safety

  • Punctual and self-directed with a strong work ethic

  • Passion for marine stewardship and environmental science

  • Possess a US Sailing Level 1 (or higher) Instructor Certification

Bonus:

  • Environmental/Science and/or Teaching/Recreational background

  • Experience with Grant writing, management or applications
