Job Description

The St. John’s College Sailing Team is seeking a sailing coach to lead sessions for our club sailing team beginning Spring of 2026. Activities include planning, implementing, and evaluating practices for a wide range of skill levels. 

Primary functions:

• Plan and lead sailing practices which are typically held, although not necessarily restricted to, Tuesdays/Wednesdays/Fridays from 4pm-6pm for our fall and spring season. Fall (September – October) & Spring (mid-March – April).

• Ensure safety of all students and staff by monitoring condition of equipment and environment

• Coordinate practice and regatta scheduling, both in conjunction with Athletics and Recreation coordinator and while giving careful attention to the college Academic Calendar

• Analyze, design, and implement practice/training sessions to improve sailors’ confidence and technique

• Perform basic rigging adjustments and other basic boat maintenance

• Communicate all repair needs with Athletics and Recreation Coordinator and Boathouse Manager

• Help sailors set and reach individual and team goals

• Assist with recruiting and retention of team-members from St. John’s polity

• Manage Health and Safety requirements, both in the Boathouse and on water

Job Requirements

• B.A. degree preferred

• Technical competence in all elements of dinghy and small keel-boat racing

• Strong coaching background and ability to support and instruct students with various levels of athletic and boating experience

• Ability to safely operate safety boat/launch

• Maryland Safe-Boating Certificate

• Current CPR + First-Aid certification or ability to obtain same

• Full, unrestricted Driver’s License

• Ability to understand and communicate with St. John’s College undergraduates, faculty, and staff
