Job Description

About Whitehurst Sailing:
Whitehurst Sailing, now in its third year of operation, is small sailing camp based out of the Whitehurst Yacht Club in Severna Park, Maryland. This summer, we will host sailing camps at three community clubs (Whitehurst, Fair Oaks, and Olde Severna Park) and at one private residence on the Magothy and Severn Rivers. Classes are divided into morning and afternoon sessions with a maximum of 20 children, aged 6 to 12, in each session. Children sail Optimists, Open Skiffs, and new this year, Flying Juniors.

This is an excellent opportunity for high school or college sailors who are looking to get experience teaching sailing. It's also a great opportunity for experienced instructors who are looking for a shorter summer commitment, more independence, and higher pay. Class sizes are small, and instructors are provided with the proper tools, training and equipment to be successful. The season is short: July 5 to August 4, 2023. And the pay is competitive, with performance-based, end-of-season bonuses. Housing and transportation can be provided for out-of-state instructors.

Instructor's Responsibilities
The Sailing Instructor will plan and deliver stimulating lessons and activities for their group of 6 to 7 sailors.

They will help foster an appreciation for sailing that can inspire children to pursue this sport throughout their childhood and adolescence.

The Sailing Instructor will focus each lesson on boating safety and ensure that each child learns how to make safe choices in and around the water.

The Sailing Instructor will teach children how to rig, derig, clean, and inspect their boats.

The Sailing Instructor will create weekly incentives to motivate children to learn and participate in camp activities (prizes, bracelets, certificates, etc..).

About The Owner (Your Boss;)

Geoff Gales is a middle school history teacher, father of 3 children, and owner of this tiny sailing school. He used to race 49ers and 505s competitively, and coached sailing for many years before becoming a teacher.
