Job Description

Pleasant Bay Community Boating is a non-profit organization that offers boating, marine education, and environmental stewardship opportunities. We are dedicated to serving all members of the community including those with physical, developmental and cognitive disabilities, as well as under-served communities. We offer youth and adult sailing lessons, community outreach sailing experiences, marine science camps and hands-on activities, and boat rentals. Our fleet includes Flying Scots, Sunfish, 420’s, Catboats, Kayaks, Lasers, Opti’s, and a solar-powered floating classroom.

PBCB is looking for qualified sailors to teach a variety of classes. Our Sailing Instructors will be confident with the sailboats they're teaching on, hold safety as a top priority, and act as role models for young sailors. Our organization will rent a property to house staff for the summer, so we will have a limited number of housing-inclusive slots available. Please indicate in your application whether you require housing.

  • Become familiar with our program offerings and be able to answer customer questions

  • Be ready to work and greet families/participants before each class that you're scheduled to teach (weekday shifts run 9 AM - noon, 12:30 - 3:30 PM, and 4:30 - 7 PM, weekend shifts are available mornings and afternoons)

  • Follow a repeating day-to-day plan and overarching curriculum for our variety of classes, which will include drills, lessons, and activities both on the water and onshore

  • Weekly offerings include youth lessons, adult lessons, outreach lessons, adaptive lessons, and family racing

  • Each lesson should begin with a chalk talk, demonstration, or drill

  • Be prepared to lead alternate activity plans for days with high winds, fog, or thunderstorms

  • For youth classes, ensure children are continuously supervised from drop off to pick up

  • Report issues with boats, students, renters, curriculum, etc. to appropriate senior staff

  • Work alongside senior staff and other instructors to make sure sailors are safe and progressing

  • Always model respect for the water, each other, and our equipment

  • Maintain a professional and fun demeanor while following all PBCB policies and guidelines

Job Requirements
  • You must be 18 or older by June 23rd, 2025

  • Strong background in sailing required, experience with the boats in our fleet preferred

  • Experience teaching sailing and willingness to work with people of all backgrounds required

  • US Sailing certifications strongly considered; current CPR/First Aid required

  • Any additional certifications or experience related to sailing, powerboating, boat maintenance, leadership, working with children, or water safety will be strongly considered

  • Availability for the duration of our staff training and summer programming required: June 16th through August 15th, 2025

  • We pay $18/hr for new instructors and $20/hr for new instructors with their US Sailing L1 instructor certification
