Job Description

SailMaine seeks a Junior Program Director to strengthen and expand our nationally recognized junior programs. 

The ideal candidate has excellent communication skills; works well in small groups; has leadership experience; is self-directed; has program development experience; has experience in small business budgeting; has experience managing a team and hiring staff; and can work in a dynamic work environment. 

A community minded person with an interest in promoting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Sailing is required, and experience working with people of many different backgrounds, cultures and perspectives is also required. 

The Junior Program Director is a full time year round role that incorporates both on and off the water responsibilities but with a majority of the work happening on land. This is an evolving role, which will grow with SailMaine. Other tasks and responsibilities could develop or grow as our organization develops.

Year-round, full-time position. Compensation: Salary $45,000 to $55,000 and competitive health insurance package and PTO based on experience.

Job Requirements

Prerequisite Skills:

  • Strong passion for the SailMaine mission 
  • Team player with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work in a dynamic environment 
  • Positive, enthusiastic outlook with a focus on community building and community sailing.
  • Drive to create a culture of excellence in education
  • Minimum 1-3 years of sailing program management (can include head instructor positions) 
  • Strong program and staff management skills 
  • Ability to create, foster and maintain strong relationships with the community for programs, fundraising, and support
  • Experience developing and implementing programs and curriculum 
  • Ability to build and lead cohesive, successful teams 
  • Exemplary interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) 
  • Flexibility, able to balance multiple competing priorities 
  • US Sailing Level 1 or 2 Small Boat Instructor Certification, First Aid Certification, CPR Certification—or willing to obtain them  
  • Experience in race management
  • Experience coaching at the high school and/or college level 
  • Valid US driver’s license & clean background check 

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and Develop Junior Program including Specific oversight and development of the following four program areas: Summer Junior Program, High School Racing and Development (Spring and Fall), Community Outreach Programs, Performance Sailing.
  • Staff Management and Development for Program Areas
  • Risk Assessment and Safety Management for Program Areas 
  • SailMaine Junior Program Administration
  • Coordinate with Leadership Staff
  • Support Operations Director on SailMaine Campus Activities and Events
  • Support Executive Director with Fundraising and Community Engagement
