Job Description

Join our team at the Sakonnet Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program, where our mission is for kids to enjoy their time on the water while learning nautical skills and forging lasting friendships. Our program features a team of instructors dedicated to teaching a wide range of classes, from introductory boating to competitive racing in Optis, C420s, Zests, Quests, and Ynglings. Students enjoy abundant opportunities to explore sailing in a fun and supportive environment. The Sakonnet Yacht Club boasts a vibrant racing team that actively competes in Narragansett Bay Yachting Association (NBYA) junior regattas and hosts its own junior regatta and club championships each summer.

We’re hiring for the following positions:

  • Head Sailing Instructor: The Head Instructor is the cornerstone of our instructional team, overseeing all sailing lessons and race coaching to ensure high-quality, effective instruction. This role requires a US Sailing Level 2 Instructor certification (Level 3 preferred), extensive teaching experience, and a strong commitment to safety. As a leader, the Head Instructor collaborates with the Program Director to uphold safety standards, mentor staff, and serve as a point of contact for parents. Successful candidates will demonstrate leadership, professionalism, and a passion for fostering growth in both students and staff.

  • Sailing Instructors: Sailing Instructors teach a variety of classes while ensuring safety and engaging students of all skill levels. Candidates must hold at least a US Sailing Level 1 certification (or equivalent) and possess a love for working with children. Instructors should be strong role models, collaborate effectively with peers, and be committed to enhancing their own sailing skills.

  • Racing Coach: The Racing Coach develops the skills and competitive spirit of our junior racing team. This role requires a US Sailing Small Boat Level 3 Coach certification (Level 2 is required), extensive experience instructing junior sailors, and a strong racing background, preferably with Optis, Lasers, or 420s. The Racing Coach collaborates with other instructors, leads practices, and coaches at regattas, instilling a love for competitive sailing.
  • Head Counselor for Harbor Camp: The Head Counselor leads our Harbor Camp team, combining creativity and organizational skills to deliver a safe, fun, and engaging program. This role involves developing daily lesson plans and schedules while ensuring activities promote a love of the harbor and exploration. Candidates should have prior experience working with young children, strong leadership skills, and comfort on the water. Swimming proficiency and enthusiasm for creating an inclusive, exciting environment are essential.
  • Harbor Camp Counselors: Harbor Camp Counselors combine creativity and patience to engage campers in dynamic, water-based activities. While previous experience with children is helpful, coachability and a positive attitude are most important. Sailing experience is not required, but comfort on the water and proficiency in swimming, rowing, and paddleboarding are necessary.
