The Coconut Grove Sailing Club Instructional Center is seeking an experienced Optimist Coach for it's Advanced RWB Fleet. Come and be a part of a 80 year tradition and coach in one of the worlds premiere sailing destinations. Our optimist team is nationally recognized and competes internationally on a regular basis.


The Advanced Optimist Racing Coach will be an integral part in managing a year round sailing program for juniors aged 6 - 18 yrs. They are responsible for the daily operations and tasks associated with the week-ends and afterschool racing sailing programs and will be a travel coach for all events, including summer and year round. They create, promote and maintain syllabus and curriculum, provide input in the hiring and training of new coaches, and assist with general maintenance projects of the Youth Sailing Program’s equipment. They must provide a very high level of coaching to the junior sailors and assist them and their families with their goals in sailing and/or sailing performance. This job involves a high degree of contact with both adult and junior membership in a service, consulting, and disciplinarian format as well as on a personal level. It should be a goal for the Opti Race Coach to be a role model for the youth sailors and a leader in the local, regional, national and international Junior Sailing community.


Primary Functions:

  1. Prepare and manage training concepts and curriculums, in order to execute trainings to the highest level possible
  2. Assist in the execution of proper safety and operational protocols
  3. securing equipment and facilities,
  4. Primary programs to include, but not be limited to:
    1. Summer camp program (racing camp)
    2. Fall, winter and spring sailing program consistent with junior sailor’s needs and availability
    3. Seasonal racing clinics
    4. Halloween Howler Regatta
    5. Miami Sailing Week
  5. Assist in the organization of the travel racing team, including but not limited to:  preparing calendars, scheduling coaches and organizing travel equipment
  6. Travel to sailing events and coach group in conjuction with other advanced Opti Race Coaches
  7. Enforce proper coaching techniques and those guidelines explained in coaching policies
  8. Attend events, functions, and meetings as needed
  9. Maintaining a high level of US Sailing standards
  10. Ensure that club powerboats (coach boats) are kept clean & good condition: free of debris, anchors/lines stowed properly, and hosed down daily after use/follow maintenance schedule and needs
  11. Ensure all equipment marks, anchors, and club equipment is put in their proper place after use
  12. Enforce end of day checklist is complete after every practice
  13. Weekly reports given to Head Opti Coach on programming, inventory, and fleet maintenance
Job Requirements
Requirements: • Must currently hold the following certifications: CPR/First Aid, SafeSport, and US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling • Minimum 4 years working as a lead coach / instructor in a sailing program • Experience with racing and rules on a variety of sailboats and competition levels • Working knowledge of outboard engines, rigging and fiberglass repair, and general boat maintenance • Possess working verbal and written communication skills • Organization and mediation skills required. Be enthusiastic, diplomatic, flexible, trustworthy, self-motivated, creative, and able to take the initiative and follow through. • Valid US driver's license and identification
