Job Description

Seasonal - No housing Included 

JOB DESCRIPTION & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. This position reports directly to the Junior Sailing Head Instructor
    • Reports to JSP Camp Director as needed
    • Works with Race Coach as needed
  2. Work with Head Instructor regarding class organization and preparation
    • Must be able to assist other Senior Instructors with other class levels as needed
    • Will assist with training of Junior Instructors and Junior Assistants
    • Must be able to prepare and follow class lesson plans
    • Keep necessary records & attendance for program & classes
    • Daily instruction on- and off-of-the water, lectures, demonstration and skill practice
  3. To work within OYC, US Sailing and MA recreational camp standards & safety requirements
  4. Shall integrate US Sailing rules & regulations in daily instruction
  5. The ability to respectfully and effectively communicate with JSP & OYC staff, students and their parents, as well as OYC members (as needed).
  6. Assist with JSP related boat maintenance, rigging, gear preparation, daily inspection of equipment used
    • Assist Junior Instructors & Junior Assistants as needed    
  7. Encourage participation in Thursday Racing sessions when appropriate
  8. Conduct all classes in a safe and professional manner
    • Maintain appropriate dress and conduct during work hours and while representing the Club at all events.

Wear proper footwear / PFD during JSP class hours and water related activities

Job Requirements

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

The following requirements are mandatory for employment as a Senior Sailing Instructor and conform to the MA DPH 105 CMR 430.000 Minimum Standards for Recreational Camps for Children:  

 

  1. Must be at least 18 years old prior to the start of the program
  2. Shall have his/her own car and valid driver’s license
  3. Must have at least five years sailing/racing experience in small boats (such as prams, dinghies, multihulls or daysailing keelboats).
  4. For new hires, prior work history for five years and a minimum of three positive references is required
    1. Returning staff may use prior OYC JSP involvement for work history & references
      1. Only if previously a JSP Senior Instructor, Junior Instructor or Junior Assistant
      2. If OYC JSP work history is LESS than 5 years, include other work history/references as needed
  5. Must have been a OYC JSP Junior Instructor for a minimum of one year AND an OYC Junior Assistant for a minimum of one year
    1. OR have equivalent experience with another sailing program(s) (provide references)
  6. Prior to the start of the Program:
    1. Shall have current U.S. Sailing Small Boat Instructor certifications
      1. Level 1 for first year instructors and Level 2 for second year/returning instructors
    2. Shall have current US Sailing Safe Powerboat Handling/Safety & Rescue Course certification
    3. Shall have current American Red Cross CPR, AED and First Aid certifications
      1. American Red Cross Lifeguard certification (as directed by Camp Director)
    4. Shall submit to applicable CORI & SORI and background checks
      1. Positive results will allow employment
    1. Shall submit a current immunization record and current health/medical form from doctor 
    1. Shall satisfactorily complete the Instructor Orientation Program
