The Head Coach, under the direction of the Director of Sailing, works in the Sailing Department, providing on-the-water coaching and leadership, both on and off-site in conjunction with other lead coaches for the various Race Teams (Laser, Optimist, C420). The Head Coach coordinates directly with the Youth Sailing Director, who supervises most other youth instructors and coaches. The Head Coach works mainly outdoors and on the water, generally Wednesday through Friday, until dark (end of sailing), and weekends, per the extensive regatta schedule; extended hours of service are often required. Office space, computer, and phone are provided for office work and organization.

Essential Functions

· Partner with other coaches and staff to provide leadership and guidance to sailors to enable full participation of club teams in regattas and other events.

  • Develop constructive changes to the program to promote SFYC sailing program. Maintain progressive calendar with Youth Sailing Director and Director of Sailing for promoting SFYC Youth regatta participation and results.
  • Coach all Race Teams as needed in conjunction with other available lead coaches.
  • Develop and lead training of other coaches and summer instructors. Assist Youth Sailing Director in scheduling other coaches for practice and regattas.
  • Communicate with Race Team sailors and parents on all aspects of their regattas and practices.
  • Drive equipment trailers as needed.
  • Identify and assist Youth Director with all Club-owned boat maintenance. Keep facility clean and safe with all staff.
 
Job Requirements
Required Skills
• Ability to coach at all levels.
• Self-starter with ideas and projects.
• Ability to operate a full range of small sailboats and motorboats safely.
• Boat maintenance knowhow for dinghy and motorboat repair and rigging, including fiberglass.
• Computer skills sufficient to communicate with sailors and their parents, and create documents when required.
• Must be able to organize multiple events at once and plan events far in the future.
• Must be able to analyze situations with regard to safety and operations and make decisions quickly and effectively.
• Trailer driving experience.
• A demeanor and ability to stand up, respectfully, to parents and Members who can be very critical.
• Sound judgment and the ability to make decisions under pressure and difficult conditions, to protect the safety of sailors and equipment.
• Knowledge of water safety.

Education, Certifications and Experience Requirements
• Certified as US Sailing Instructor Level 1 or above throughout tenure in this position. US Sailing Level 3 preferred.
• SafeSport Certification
• CA Boaters Card
• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• College Sailing team experience preferred.
• Olympic Class or Olympic Development racing experience preferred.
• Extensive knowledge and experience with boat transportation (trailers).
• Valid driver’s license, extensive driving experience and good driving record.
