Position:             Race Coach  

Classification:     Full Time/Part Time, Seasonal, Non-Benefit Eligible

Reports To:         General Manager & SSYC Junior Advisor

Hourly rate:         $18 - $22 Depending on experience.


Job Summary


The Race Coach is responsible for the development of competitive youth sailors within the SSYC Junior Sailing school. With a proven track record and a passion for developing athletes to achieve their full potential you will be responsible for designing and implementing training programs, providing strategic guidance on and off the water and fostering a culture of excellence and sportsmanship. The Race coach will teach advanced sailing classes, organize the weekly summer race series, and participate in travel regattas. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in dingy and keelboat racing.  You will need to collaborate with volunteers, communicate with parents, and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment. Additionally, the Race coach will work with the SSYC Kaszube Cup Chair in organizing the annual SSYC Junior youth regatta. It is expected, the Race Coach will conduct themselves with professionalism and embody the values of South Shore Yacht Club and the Junior Sailing program. 



·        Develop and implement tailored training programs for advanced sailing classes with a focus on racing techniques and holistic development of youth sailors.

·        Provide coaching on and off the water, preparing youth sailors for regattas and advanced sailing skills including starting, mark rounding, sail trim and race rules. Fostering a competitive edge.  

·        Organize the weekly Summer Series race ensuring a challenging yet supportive environment that encourages growth and health competition.   

·        Travel to regattas providing guidance on rigging and coaching ensuring SSYC youth sailors are prepared and competitive.

·      Coordinate team match ups and trailer assignments. Coordinate volunteers/parents to assist in the preparation of away regattas.

·        Teach advanced sailing and racing tactics classes for Opti, 420 and Laser boats.

·        Assist the Kaszube Cup Chair in coordinating the annual SSYC youth regatta.  


Job Requirements

· US Sailing Level 2 sailing Small Boat Certification.

· US sailing Safe Sport training.

· Prior coaching experience with a focus on youth development is highly desired.

· Ability to travel to regattas throughout WI and IL.

· Proven experience in dingy and keelboat racing.

· Strong leadership and organizational skills.

· Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal abilities.

· CPR and First Aid certification.

· Knowledge of sailing safety standards and regulations.

· Basic knowledge of Opti, 420 and Laser rigging and tuning, advanced knowledge preferred.
