Job Description

The Sarasota Sailing Squadron – host of the 2018 F18 International Regatta and 2021 Sunfish Worlds – is seeking a General Manager with experience in managing people, facilities and large events. We have a large membership (600+ memberships and boats on site), are the primary community resource for teaching both adults and children to sail, have an active event and regatta schedule and 9 acres of prime Sarasota Bayfront property with extensive marine facilities including docks, a hoist, multiple buildings and a work area.

The successful candidate for this job would have experience in operating a safe organization, team building among staff and members, organizational planning and budget management and control. Nature of the organization requires working a flexible schedule while overseeing the evaluation and maintenance of a variety of physical assets and the control of capital expenditures. A working knowledge of computer operations and the use of social media to communicate to members and to increase membership in the club are important elements of this position.  Working experience with a marina, social club, sailing club, the hospitality industry, or running an independent business a plus.

Job Requirements

Establishes and maintains a culture of safety and a respectful, enjoyable environment.

Manages the daily operations, staff and facilities. Able to work a flexible schedule with seasonal variation as operations require. Must be organized, detail oriented, and able to initiate, track and advance projects from start to finish. Comfortable with multitasking and working with interruptions.

Has good communication and team building skills; will use those skills with employee team, volunteer team, board and our community partners.

Manages the annual budget as provided by the board, including controlling costs and providing financial information for the board.

Able to work with a multi-member nonprofit board. The composition of the board changes annually and board members are actively involved in operations.

Provides ongoing maintenance and evaluation of physical assets, anticipates physical property needs and oversees capital projects.

Experienced in managing multiple events in one facility while the facility remains open for normal operations; managing multi-day events hosting hundreds of participants.

Familiar with social media and generally computer literate. Responsible for using social media to drive membership and inform current members, uses a suite of office software including client relationship management and accounting.


Skilled in forecasting budget shortfalls, taking corrective action to address budget shortfalls and identifying new revenue opportunities.

Experience improving operations and increasing membership/revenues.

Bachelor’s degree (preferably in management, business or finance) or applicable experience with a sailing club, marina management, hospitality, property management or self-owned business. Previous managerial, leadership or coaching history.

Knowledge of sailing, sailboat racing and sailing education programs.
