Waterfront Director

 

The Cleveland Yachting Club is looking for a Waterfront Director who will manage all aspects of on the water programs and operations.

 

Founded in 1878, the Cleveland Yachting Club is one of the oldest and finest yachting clubs in America.

 

This is a strategic position in support of the Club’s mission “To promote family-oriented and friendly club activities anchored in the tradition of yachting”.

 

Position Summary:

Manages and is responsible for all water-based Club programs including Sail Camp, Junior Race Team, and Adult Learn to Sail.  Directly supervises Assistant Sail Camp Director and Junior Race Team coaches.  Assists chairperson from each water-based Club Fleet in organizing of Sail Fleet, Power Fleet, Wet Hens, and Fishing Fleet.

 

Works closely with the Harbor Master, Member volunteer chairpersons and committees to plan, organize, and execute all Club water-based programs.

 

Accountabilities:

 

·       Together with Sail Camp chairperson organizes and executes the annual Sail Camp program; hires and provides daily supervision of Sail Camp counselors; develops Sail Camp curriculum and implements year-to-year development plan for campers from beginning to advanced skill levels.

·       Together with Jr. Race chairperson organizes and executes the Junior Race Team program including hiring and supervising of Junior Race team coaches; organizes and manages Jr. Race team travel for all events across season-long regatta schedule.

·       Coordinates the required maintenance of all Club-owned sail and power boats, trailers, and other water-activity and support equipment.

·       Researches, recommends, and purchases new sail boats, coach boats and other water-activity and/or required equipment in support of Club water-based activities.

·       Assists with development and maintaining of a multi-year capital expense budget and with coordination of purchases of new Club assets for water-based activities with the Ways and Means Committee for inclusion into the annual budget.

·       Creates and promotes new in-season water-based programs to increase member utilization of the water.

·       Assists with organizing the annual Sail Fleet program including the sail race calendar, sailing regattas, and weekly Club races in conjunction with the Committee chairperson.  Schedules and coordinates the Race Committee.

·       Coordinates the maintenance and installation of Club racing marks with the Yard Manager.

·       Assists with coordination and planning of the annual Power Fleet cruises in conjunction with the Committee chairperson.

·       Assists with coordination and planning of the annual Fishing Derby in conjunction with the Committee chairperson.

·       Creates, organizes, and delivers off-season training, licensing and informational programs aligned to boating and other water-based activities (e.g., tech-talks, Captain/Navigational courses, coaching certifications) to promote off-season member engagement and member skill development.

·       Prepares a regular column for a monthly newsletter to promote and celebrate events.

 

Job Requirements
Required Skills and Experience

· Undergraduate degree in business, sports management, or other appropriate area of study.

· Extensive experience in the sports of sailing and boating including instruction and race management. (Minimum of U.S. Sailing Level 2 Instructor Certification preferred. USCG OUPV License a plus.)

· Extensive experience handling all types of water vessels including sail and power.

· Understanding of maintenance routines required for all Club owned vessels.

· Computer skills in data base management, word processing, and spreadsheets.

· Excellent communication skills.

· Outgoing personality, diplomatic, flexible, trustworthy, and mission driven.

· Experience preparing and managing a departmental budget.

· Experience managing direct reports.



Working Relationships and Environment

This position reports directly to the General Manager.



This position requires extensive physical activity in all weather conditions. It regularly requires working evenings, weekends, and extended hours. It also requires day travel to/from Junior regattas during many weekends throughout the summer.
