Job Summary
Responsible for all activities related to any water sport to include but not limited to, sailing, boating, fishing, kayaking, dock and piers and the care and maintenance club vessels, hoist and waterfront grounds. Hire, train and supervise staff. Apply teaching, coaching and mentoring principles to assure that quality standards are consistently achieved and/or exceeded. Develop youth programs that exceed the local market and completion. Maintain a safe, organized productive work environment. The Waterfront Director should have a comprehensive knowledge of the Gulfport Yacht Club rules, bylaws and policies, particularly as they pertain to the sailing activities of the club. The position also requires extensive knowledge of and experience in sailing, race management, regatta management and sailing instruction. It is imperative that the Waterfront Director (Sailing Director) possess proven administrative ability; written and verbal communication skills; the ability to work with diverse individuals and groups.
Job Tasks (Duties)
- The Waterfront Director will work with the General Manager, Sailing Committee, its Sub-Committee, or any Special Committee to formulate standard policies and procedures for administration of the club waterfront program(s). Such a procedures manual will be written and periodically updated by the Waterfront Director after approval of said procedures by the General Manager, Sailing Committee, the Governing Board and the Commodore.
- The Waterfront Director shall work with the General Manager and Treasurer of the club to formulate an annual budget to be recommended for adoption by the Sailing Committee and Governing Board.
- The Waterfront Director shall work with the General Manager, Dock and Piers Chairman, Power Boat Chairman, Maintenance Manager to formulate and implement policies for the routine maintenance and inventory of club-owned boats, motors, trailers, sail lockers and equipment – including Race Management and Gulf Coast Foundation equipment. While the GYC Committee Boats are the responsibility of the Chairman of the Committee Boat Committee, the Waterfront Director will work with that Chairman to see that his/her policies on the use and maintenance are adhered to by those using the Committee Boats during any course of Junior or Adult Sailing instructions.
- The Waterfront Director shall implement and formulate junior waterfront program(s), lessons and policies for the Juniors of the club.
- The Waterfront Director shall implement and formulate adult waterfront program(s), lessons, and policies for the Adults of the club.
- The Waterfront Director shall work with the Race Management Committee to organize a program for both class room and on-the-water instruction in race management, which can lead to an official club race officer designation.
- The Waterfront Director shall assist the One Design, Offshore and Regatta Chairman in programs involving intra-club sailing, conduct of GYC hosted regattas and participation in Capdevielle events, and other regattas.
- When the need arises, the Waterfront Director will work with the General Manager, Fleet Captain and Hurricane Committee to help implement the Hurricane Evacuation plan.
- Other specific duties may be assigned time to time by the General manager, Sailing Committee or Commodore to implement specific duties related to the GYC Waterfront programs.
- The Waterfront Director shall work with the General Manager and Maintenance Manager on daily operations and routine maintenance of club property.
- The Waterfront Director shall work with the General Manager, Fleet Captain, Maintenance Manager and Swim Team Coach to assure all Risk-Management procedures and policies are implemented and followed.
