About the Carolina Yacht Club
Founded in 1853, Carolina Yacht Club (CYC1853) is a member-owned private yacht club on Wrightsville Beach, NC. The club boasts sound and oceanfront properties for members' enjoyment and offers a vibrant sailing culture with racing and recreational sailing opportunities. CYC1853 provides an active, family-friendly atmosphere where members, their spouses, and children can socialize, relax on the beach, swim, and participate in various watersports and club activities.
Position Summary
The Waterfront Director is responsible for leading efforts to enhance waterfront operations, ensuring high-quality sailing and water-based experiences at Carolina Yacht Club. This role oversees the Waterfront Operations and Safety, Event Management, Program Management, Staff Supervision, Membership and Volunteer Engagement, and Waterfront Administrative Duties. The Waterfront Director also acts as the Interim Full-Time Race Coach and Adult Sailing Instructor when needed, supporting the General Manager in maintaining exceptional waterfront experiences.
Waterfront Operations & Safety
Knowledgeable, able troubleshoot, maintain, and oversee all upkeep, and organization of all waterfront equipment including sailboats, motorized vessels, and the sailing building.
Develop, enforce and perform the Waterfront Emergency Action Plan in collaboration with the Safety Committee.
Build and maintain relationships with the U.S. Coast Guard Station Wrightsville Beach to ensure compliance and safety.
Ensure safe and efficient operations of boat rentals and storage spaces.
Continuously demonstrate the ability and enthusiasm to coach all classes, ages, skill levels, programs and fleets at any time. (Beginners, Race Team, Adult, etc)
Event Management
Manage and execute waterfront events, including the Sound Series, Ocean Series, Fun Sail, Sip N Sail, seasonal race team regattas, motorboat courses, and other club events.
Coordinate with volunteer committees (Race Team, Regatta, and Waterfront Safety) to support sailing events and ensure seamless execution.
Work closely with local, regional and national Sailing Organizations and Race Officials to coordinate higher level regattas and events.
Serve as the primary point of contact for college race teams and non-CYC regattas hosted at CYC facilities.
Program Management
Maintains the culture and standards of sailing at CYC.
Create and maintain forecast of programs and events in future periods.
Oversees the management of all Youth Sailing Programs throughout the year including Summer Program, Learn to Sail and Competitive Racing Teams.
Coordinates and Manages Adults Learn to Sail, Recreational and other Adult Sailing Events.
Staff Supervision
Hire and manage the Full Time Sailing Program Manager
Assists in hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising seasonal staff, including dockmasters, head dockmasters, seasonal race team coaches, etc.
Oversee staff performance, ensuring alignment with club standards and member expectations.
Membership & Volunteer Engagement
Build and maintain strong relationships with volunteers to support sailing events and foster community engagement while recruiting and retaining new volunteers.
Manage Volunteer roles and responsibilities to best support Waterfront Events.
Address member feedback related to waterfront activities to enhance satisfaction and improve services.
Administrative & General
Develop and manage the annual waterfront budget, ensuring alignment with financial and operational goals.
Utilize database and spreadsheet applications for data analysis, project management, and trend reporting.
Support policy enforcement and facility maintenance for waterfront operations.
Maintain a systems mindset by following established workflows, developing documentation when needed, and ensuring existing documentation is accurate.
Stay current on industry trends and best practices in sailing, waterfront safety, and race management.
Support non-waterfront activities as needed during the off-season.
Assume additional leadership responsibilities as directed by the General Manager.
