Job Description

The WYC Senior Staff are the backbone of the Learn to Sail Program.  Senior Instructors, in teams, are responsible for the leading and management of the Junior Sailing Program classes.  The coach will be responsible for preparing sailors for success on the water.  Teaching novices the building blocks of the sport in a fun, engaging, dynamic environment is the core of your responsibilities.  This will include developing and executing a progressive curriculum, with daily lesson plans and well-organized class sessions.  Often, coaches will be expected to sail in boats with students.  Coaches will teach Monday-Friday from 8:30-4:30 with some evening commitments as the Junior Sailing Program schedule dictates.  There will also be a requirement of some weekend work.

Expectations:

 

  • Create and implement a curriculum to develop sailors within the WYC program
  • Develop sailors in terms of boat handling, speed and tactics
  • Develop appropriate lesson plans based on student needs and the weather of the day
  • Design and manage fun, engaging classes
  • Design class goals while managing the individual needs of your students
  • Be role a model, encouraging sportsmanship, seamanship and enthusiasm
  • Communicate clearly and consistently with sailors, parents, fellow instructors, the assistant coach and the club manager about class objectives, issues, and daily experiences
    • This will include weekly newsletters about your class and your students’ exeperiences
  • Work closely and collaboratively with fellow coaches to ensure efficient program operations
  • Ensure that boats are properly maintained and remain in seamanlike conditions at all times
  • Ensure that coach boats are properly maintained and remain in clean seamanlike conditions at all times
  • Solicit feedback from staff, sailors and parents on class direction and course correct as necessary
Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

 

Certification as a US Sailing Instructor (Level 1 Small Boat Sailing Instructor)

Current CPR and First Aid Certified

Motorboat License (can be from coach’s home state)

Prior experience with opti coaching on and off the water

Strong sailing resume with demonstrated competitive experience, including both one-design fleet racing and team racing

Technical expertise in sail trim, boat handling and rigging

Strong references from previous coaching experiences
