Job Description

 

Columbia Sailing School is looking for a full-time Sailing Program Manager who has experience in coaching and program management. We are a 501(c)3 organization housed within Columbia Yacht Club located in downtown Chicago. Every year, we welcome over 500 kids ages 5-18 to the shorelines of Lake Michigan for classes ranging from adventure boating to high-performance racing. During the fall and spring seasons, we host 8 local high schools that compete in the MISSA High School sailing conference. As a certified REACH Center of Excellence, we also focus heavily on outreach to underserved area schools in accordance with US Sailing’s REACH Curriculum. In 2019 we were also designated as the primary Siebel Sailing Center for the Midwest Region of the United States with a purpose to increase opportunity and diversity in the sport of sailing by providing resources and support to youth sailors. Columbia Sailing School is heavily involved in all aspects of sailing and marine education, and we are looking for a well-rounded individual who can continue to build our program and call Chicago home.

Job Summary

Manage and promote all Columbia Sailing School operations including but not limited to; youth sailing, fundraising, and marine education programs, youth regattas, and rentals.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directly Manage all youth sailing programs in accordance with the On the Water Director’s guidelines

  • Develop and operate a year-round youth marine education program in accordance with US Sailing’s REACH Program guidelines

  • Hire and manage summer coaches

  • Set up and maintain registrations for all youth sailing programs

  • Coach during High School season

  • Work with On the Water Director and Keelboat Director to manage and inventory all sailing school assets, and set up and perform all maintenance schedules

  • Assist with fiberglassing and fleet repair

  • Maintain best practice safety standards for all Sailing School programs

  • Assist with regattas and adult coaching as needed

  • Occasional regional overnight travel to regattas



Marketing

  • Organize external recruiting activities with a focus on sailing education, race committee, and regattas for all levels

  • Create high-quality marketing materials for direct distribution

  • Identify appropriate opportunities to market the Club including membership and facility rentals

  • Identify opportunities to continually improve the experience for members and potential members alike

  • Develop sponsorships and cross-promotions to grow the brand with a focus on educational events

Communications

  • Ensure consistency of all internal and external communications

  • Promote all educational events in a professional and timely manner

  • Manage Columbia’s internet presence for on-water programs including website updates and social media communications

  • Provide requested reports and data to General Manager, Committee Heads and Board of Directors

  • Make recommendations and work with Board of Directors to set financial goals for Sailing School

  • Attend/Participate in daily staff meetings, weekly manager meetings, and committee meetings as required

Knowledge. Skills. and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred; preferably with a concentration in Sports Management/Marketing
  • Minimum Level 1 US Sailing Certification

  • At least 2 years of experience in club Sailing School operations

  • Previous racing experience highly preferred

  • Experience working with diverse populations preferred

  • Works well with different types of relationships such as parents, employees, volunteers, and board members

  • Self-starter and can confidently work independently

  • Comfortable driving trailers up to 35’ or willing to be trained

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office

  • Working knowledge of Google Suite
